I was super sad when I heard you hated Woody Allen—I love his movies, but mainly his old films, so I can understand the disinterest in the new stuff. I watch Zelig every time I am sad and it makes the world a better place. Also, I am a HUGE Almadovar fan-he understands women in such a beautiful way and I bought Talk to Her and haven’t seen it in ages and am going to watch it right now.
RE: Philosophizing: I am going into the academic world and it really pisses me off when people talk downward and that is why academics are viewed to be such assholes. I have a few friends I talk about that stuff with and cut it off from everyone else as I don’t want to be a douchebag. I view all my sociological blahblahblah as a hobby and not everyone shares the same hobby.

I find the extreme response you get to that Peter Rollins statement really interesting. You always seem to get such a reaction when you say anything about emphasizing mercy and love over rules. It’s like a dog whistle to Real True Christians (or at least it was to me back when I was one). When you say anything against THE RULES what they hear is “ZOMG, someone is messing with THE RULES! They are trying to make all those sexual sinners feel not guilty! They are trying to make being gay not a terrible sin! They must be stopped!” Words like “acceptance”, “love” and “grace” are just code words for being OK with the gay!
Or maybe that was just me…
Point is that such an attitude undermines the 4 foundational doctrines of modern Christianity:
Abortion is murder
Homosexuality is sin (the worst!)
Evolution is a lie
Environmentalism is a hoax (also pagan!)
I expect something about feminism will be added soon enough. Point is you can believe anything you want about Jesus, but those are the things that make you welcome or unwelcome in the Christian community (great example: Mitt Romney). So that Rollins piece pushed against the 4 pillars of Christianity and that’s a guaranteed way to ruffle feathers!
I loved, loved, LOVED the “Call the Dong Line” theme song you introduced this week. Mad props to the listener who submitted it. When he gets to that part where he drops down to the low note to say “dong”, I get this crazy image in my brain about one of you holding a huge silicone dong, whacking it against a Chinese gong… or just generally gonging some instrument using a dong mallet.
There is a poem that my husband wrote about gonging a gong with a dong, and I am not even kidding.
I posed the idea that a penis needed to be big enough to gong a gong to be called a dong. Stephanie mentioned this to David and he spat this out while watching TV. The man is a genius.

I think it is great–and rather telling–that there are two relatively serious comments to open this week’s podcast comments, but you devoted all of your attention to talking about the merits of dong-gonging, replete with links to poetry on the subject (Albeit, a very good poem. Props to David…)
I think I’m somewhat of a kindred spirit: I once wrote a poem about the merits of combining morning bathroom tasks to save time before work.
I’ll check out Clownvis Presley later today. Dongs can make a joyful noise, as well, and all of you have helped remind me of this.
Good poetry should never rhyme. Hence, the rhyming.
