Dongtini Episode 111

Stephy got some rosary beads and Simone has been doing Buddhist meditation. Let that sink in. Also: self-hatred as a western concept, post-nap depression, dancing alone, how do you describe Adam Levine?, Dongs In The News, Taco Bell News, pretentious vegans, the original James Bond.

Here is the Vice article on vegans not necessarily being pretentious.

My dad was subscribed the Kenneth Copeland Ministries magazine and I still remember they had this article on meditation. Christians were supposed to meditate as commanded in the Bible (Joshua I think) but that meant constantly focusing on the scriptures. Eastern style meditation was a big no-no because if you emptied your mind you were opening the door for demons to enter your mind and plant things. True story!!
Correct me if I’m wrong though but didn’t Catholicism get a lot of its bells & whistles from Buddhism in the first place? As I remember it, monks, nuns, monasteries and rosaries all came from the eastern religions originally (unless I was horribly misinformed or remembering a Chick tract instead of a history book). Anyway if that’s the case it would make sense that Catholics are more OK with meditation than Evangelicals are.
Right? The icons and meditation and chanting strike me as really similar traditions between Catholicism and Buddhism. Also their culture of monasticism. Catholics have a lot more respect for mystery and the ethereal than Evangelicals do for sure.
This comment is not especially relevant to today’s episode (though it was delightful! I especially enjoyed listening to your experiences with meditation, and I really appreciated the suggestion to wish yourself the best because it will help you to be a better person to others. That’s something I struggle with myself, and I’m definitely going to remember that–thanks!)
But really, this comment is a Taco Bell-related ¨thank you.¨ I’m currently visiting my parents in the Midwest for an ENTIRE MONTH, and while my parents aren’t generally big fast food eaters, last weekend my mom and dad excitedly informed me that we were going to Taco Bell for lunch, ¨it’s our Sunday treat!¨ my mother exclaimed. Cue panic. Previously, I had not eaten at a taco bell since high school, and I’m allergic to a lot of stuff, and while I’m not a vegetarian, I wasn’t especially enthused at the thought of Taco Bell meat. Fortunately, I remembered Dongtini, and was like, ¨Wait! What did Simone say she orders?¨ I was pretty sure it was the Nacho’s Bell Grande, but minus the meat. Is that right? Anyway, that’s what I ordered, and it was quite tasty, and satisfying, and did not make me sick (and also only like $3.50!) Thanks to your podcast, what could have turned into a horrific, painful afternoon was instead a lovely day out with mom and dad. Thanks, you guys, you’re the best!
Love and Tacos,
Kat (Not Taco Cat)
PS. I DO recommend avoiding the diet Baja blast Mountain Dew (WHAT WAS I THINKING???!!!!) it tastes like aspartame and despair. Please know that I do not blame Dongtini for my unfortunate soda-decision.
How lovely that Dongtini provided such a state of rescue for a potentially woeful situation! And I love the Taco Cat reference! I haven’t seen them but they’re one of my favorite Seattle bands based solely on their name.
I had a cake!
Last night while laying in bed, reading on my kindle, there was a passage that described the main character. The main character was also on the cover of the book – so my dumb brain turned the kindle over so I could compare the cover to the description..
