I don’t know how cross cultural this is but I’ve often heard people say how God “plucked the most beautiful flower from His garden”, especially when a child died. That always left me with a bad case of WTF?! It sounds more like something from Greek mythology where you had to hope and pray you were mediocre because if you stood out in any way you may attract the attention of a god and then your life would be fucked. I mean I get that a preacher can’t use the words “damn guys, this shit is fucked up” from the pulpit but these trite rationalizations are THE WORST!
