@Stephy - You know how when you call Mars Hill a cult, sometimes people say that's kind of a strong term? Well I came across this test called the Advanced Bonewits’ Cult Danger Evaluation Frame which measures if a group is a cult or not. Seems to me like Driscoll's Mars Hill scores pretty high on this test!

Eugene, do you remember how mad Driscoll got when Rob Bell wrote "Love Wins" and called him a heretic? That book was great. Wang Rise! Dong Dome!! So fitting Mars was the Roman god of war - for Driscoll's church, anyway. Not the Mars Hill Grad School-turned-SSTP or Rob Bell's church. It's why Cote named Venus Hill that, as an answer to the Driscoll Mars Hill misogyny, hee!

HAHA playing "Good Riddance" at funerals!! There's a really beautiful spot near here that people love to get married at but it's called Deception Pass and I think it's so funny to see that on a wedding invitation.

That's so funny that the original Mars Hill was a spot for a failed sermon! It's like when people play songs with "love" in the chorus at their weddings, but it's actually a breakup song in the verses. Or when people play Green Day's 'Time of Your Life" at funerals, unaware that the song is actually called 'Good Riddance'. Gold!

"Pretty dissimilar" would be putting it mildly! The two Mars Hill's are really like night and day! I live in the wrong hemisphere so I've never been to either but I've read all of Bell's books and for all of Mark Driscoll's obsession with "correct dogma", Rob Bell seems to understand Christianity a lot better than he does. I know a lot of Christians had a collective shit fit over "Love Wins" and started calling Rob the Antichrist because of it but I doubt they actually read the book! The stuff Mark does on other hand I really would consider anti-Christ.

So all I'm trying to say is that I really like Rob Bell and I hate that the name Mars Hill has now become synonymous with a sex obsessed, misogynistic cult leader like Driscoll!

Still, that message needs to get out there so I shouldn't complain. Stephy, you're clearly doing the Lord's work! Never let up on Driscoll!

Rob Bell, who is kind of rad, founded Mars Hill Church in Michigan, and it's pretty dissimilar to Driscoll's Mars Hill Church in Seattle, and it's been a source of much confusion. Also, there's a graduate school here that I love that was called Mars Hill Grad School and they recently changed their name (to Seattle School of Theology and Psychology) due to the confusion with Driscoll's Mars Hill Church.

Factoid: Mars Hill (or the Aeropagus) was a place near the Acropolis where philosophers in ancient Rome would convene and talk philosophy, so that's why the name Mars Hill is used for so many Christian institutions who fancy themselves to have a philosophical bent. [Here's the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Areopagus But what cracks me up about it is the Apostle Paul went there to have a conversation with them about how they had their heads basically stuck up their asses (and were doing what I call theolojizzing) and it was more or less a failed conversation. And yet people still name their church stuff after it. Hee!

I didn't know about the other Mars Hill! I am educated on all this by Stephy. We are always talking about the Driscoll one because that's the one Stephy is familiar with and knows people who've been in the church. We will clarify in future!
